Document controllers manage all drawings and documents used by a project. They assign drawing numbers and revisions. They also distribute drawings and change notices to all who need them as new versions are created. Document controllers also distribute drawings upon request. Document controllers may also be called data managers and change managers.

    Document Controller Job Training

    • Training for 9001 standards is available from the International Standards Organization, as well as from many companies that offer training and assistance in qualifying for ISO 9001. ISO 20000 applies document control standards to Information Technology infrastructure libraries. It is recommended that document controllers be familiar with ISO 9000 and ISO 9001. Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) requires document control for software versions and releases for software. Training on CMMI is available from the Software Engineering Institute.

    Document Controller Job Certifications

    • Document controllers can be certified as ISO Auditors and ISO Lead Auditors, allowing them to review and audit their own document control systems. ITIL Practitioners are qualified to manage information technology libraries. The ITIL Practitioner certification can be earned by passing the exam offered by the ITIL Foundation. Software Engineering Institute offers certification for CMMI assessors and trainers. CMMI assessor certification is recommended for those who want to ensure that their software project's document control processes meet CMMI standards.

    • Document controllers work within any company that generates large numbers of documents or has many drawings that are continuously updated. Document controllers typically work at civil engineering firms, engineering design companies and within technical libraries.
