Canadian Working Visa Information
Canadian work visas are required for all non-nationals that wish to work in Canada for a period of time. There are several different requirements that must be met before the embassy/consulate will be able to issue to the visa. Once the Canadian government issues the work permit you will be able to work for the company that you have secured a position with, and your work will even be able to apply for extensions if they wish to keep you on staff, and you wish to stay.

Requirements for All Worker Permit Applicants
-
There are some requirements that have to be met by all people who wish to obtain a work visa. This includes the completion of the Application for a Work Permit Made Outside of Canada (see Resources), a valid national passport, additional passport photos, a job offer/work contract, proof that you are suitable for the job you have obtained, proof of sufficient funds, fee payment, and any additional documents that may be requested by either the embassy/ consulate or by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Permanent Residents
-
People who have permanent residency outside of their country of citizenship must be able to show appropriate documentation proving that they will be able to return to their country of residence. For permanent residents of the United States this means you must either have your Green Card or an I-155 stamp in your passport.

Quebec
-
There are additional requirements for people who wish to work within the province of Quebec. When working in Quebec your employer has to take additional steps to make sure that you are authorized to work in Quebec. This often involves additional fees and paperwork. You must make sure that your employer completes these steps before your work visa/work permit can be issued.
Medical Exam
-
Some work permits may require that you complete a medical exam before you are allowed to enter the country and work. The medical exam is necessary for workers that wish to work in fields where public health can be a major concern. These workers include: lab researchers, medical students, physicians, in-home care workers, primary school teachers, and people who intend to work with small children or in a nursery.
Submit the Work Visa Application
-
The work permit/ work visa application must be submitted to the nearest Canadian embassy/ consulate to your residence. The work permit application normally processes within 1 to 28 days.
Receiving your Work Permit
-
If you are a citizen of a country which qualifies as a visa exempt county in Canada (such as citizens of the United States) then if you are granted a work permit you will receive a letter that you will hand to the immigration officer at the Canadian port of entry. He will give you your work permit. If you are a citizen of a country who needs to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before entering Canada you will be required to submit your passport with the visa application paperwork so that you will receive a TRV at the same time that you will receive your letter to give to the immigration officer. You will also receive your work permit at the Canadian port of entry once you submit the letter to the immigration officer.
