Craft for Kids Using Yarn on Canvas

A basket of possibilities.

There are many activities than can be done using just a few simple items. For instance, with just yarn, a needle and a plastic canvas. This type of activity is suitable for a child who can handle a needle safely and knows how to do a basic stitch. Simple needlepoint projects are a great way to avoid a mess and acclimate your child to simple sewing techniques.

Lettering

Leave room for the whole name.

An advanced seamstress might like to attempt to complete a needlepoint of her name. To accomplish this task, begin in the middle of the canvas and estimate how much space will be needed for each letter. Sew the entire name into the canvas. Then, using a different color, surround the name with basic stitching.

Seasonal Shapes

Fun Christmas project.

Cut out a shape from a large piece of plastic canvas. For the winter, try a Christmas Tree or use three pre-cut circle canvas shapes to make a snowman. Stitch several ornaments into the tree shape in different colors. Then stitch around them, covering the rest of the shape with green yarn. For a snowman, stitch on his scarf, face and other accessories, then stitch the rest of the snowman with white yarn.

Keepsake Box

Makes a great gift for any occasion.

Complete five square plastic canvas pieces, then stitch them together in the shape of a keepsake box, using four for the walls of the box and one for the base.

Folder Pocket

Stitched folders make filing fun.

Stitch one whole sheet of plastic canvas and set aside. Cut a sheet of plastic canvas in half, width-wise, and stitch the entire half sheet. Attach the half sheet to the whole sheet to create a folder where you can store papers or school assignments.

Photo Frame

Stitch a frame.

Stitch an entire plastic canvas sheet and set aside. Next, cut a photo-sized square or rectangle out of another plastic canvas sheet. Stitch the sheet up so that it looks like a frame. Attach three sides of the frame piece to the whole piece. You should be left with a frame that has one side open so that you can slide a photo in.
