When a personal computer is purchased it comes with a standard set of pre-loaded applications that makes the computer run. The creation of these applications requires a high level of expertise and knowledge. This is one of the many duties that falls under the diverse duties of an application analyst. Application analysts are found throughout the business world, customizing software packages and applications to meet the needs of their clients.

Definitions

  • An application analyst is a person trained to use different computer languages such as Java, Pascal, and C+ + to instruct a computer in completing a task. They also use these languages to create application programs designed around the specific request of a client.

Programming Duties

  • Some of the main duties of an application analyst are creating word processing applications and web browsers. Once the program has been designed the analyst is responsible for running tests to ensure the program works correctly, preparing reports on the program and creating any needed instruction manuals or help screens. An applications analyst also maintains the programs and creates any upgrades necessary. Sometimes this means adapting or de-bugging an existing program.

Communication with Clients

  • An applications analyst needs to have good communication skills. As an analyst you talk to different clients to determine their needs. It is important that those needs are understood and met. Some clients may require in-person training on the new program.

Job Skills and Education

  • The job as an applications analyst requires that you have strong knowledge of computer hardware and software along with the knowledge of different computer languages. You should be able to work independently as well as in a group or team and you must be detail-oriented and accurate. A bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics or any related field is the minimum education required. Some colleges do offer one- and two-year certification courses. The job does not require a lot of travel and in most cases work is done from home or an office.

  • A career in the field of computers has an abundance of job opportunities. Any setting in which a computer is used such as a bank, a hospital or any government agency will always require an application analyst. Ideally an application analyst decides on the setting to work in and the hours to work. The option to open your own business is available along with the option to teach computer programming at a technical school. With the variety of jobs comes a variety in salaries. The average salary for an application analyst is around $76,000 per year.
