TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food is designed specifically for orchids.

Orchids grown indoors require special care in order to thrive. One of those conditions is adequate nutrients specific to orchids. TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food is an all-natural product available in garden centers formulated specifically for orchids to help them bloom consistently and grow well in an indoor environment. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. About TerraCycle, Inc.

    • TerraCycle, Inc. is an ingenious company that uses liquefied worm waste to produce organic garden, lawn and orchid plant foods. In addition to its line of fertilizers, the company offers backpacks and lunch boxes made of recycled materials. TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food is packaged using recycled soda bottles and left over spray tops.

    How it Works

    • TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food capitalizes on the harmonious relationship between plants and worms and the nutrients provided by worm waste. Worms excrete natural fertilizer after eating dead plant matter, which contributes to the overall quality of the soil and the nutrients needed for plants to thrive. Orchid growers spray the liquefied worm waste on plants once a week to provide much need nutrients to indoor orchids and to increase the fertility of the soil they are grown in.

    Benefits

    • Orchid experts at the American Orchid Society recommend feeding orchids regularly with a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous, but they recommend using a fertilizer with little to no urea. The problem with inorganic fertilizers is that urea is a common component of fertilizer used to provide nitrogen to plants. Using an organic orchid food such as TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food is beneficial because, in addition to nutrients produced from worm waste, sodium nitrate--an all-natural source of nitrate--is added to the formula in a low enough dose to be considered organic. The result is healthy, vigorous plants.

    Where to Find It

    • TerraCycle gardening products have become quite common in recent years as the word spreads about the product's performance and unique contribution to green living and organic gardening. As of 2010, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods Market and other retail garden centers carry a full line of TerraCycle gardening products, including Orchid Plant Food.

    Recommendations

    • The Natural Home Gardening Club has member tested and recommended TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food. Additionally, in an interview with Gardener's Supply Company, orchid expert Anita Nadeau recommended using TerraCycle Orchid Plant food as an all-natural fertilizer to help orchids re-bloom. TerraCycle is OMRI listed, meaning the Organic Materials Review Institute has independently reviewed the product against national organic standards and considers it acceptable for organic use.
