Orchid experts at the American Orchid Society recommend feeding orchids regularly with a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous, but they recommend using a fertilizer with little to no urea. The problem with inorganic fertilizers is that urea is a common component of fertilizer used to provide nitrogen to plants. Using an organic orchid food such as TerraCycle Orchid Plant Food is beneficial because, in addition to nutrients produced from worm waste, sodium nitrate--an all-natural source of nitrate--is added to the formula in a low enough dose to be considered organic.
