Dermatologists are specialized physicians who work specifically with patients' skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If you're interested in becoming a dermatologists, there are several factors to consider in evaluating your salary potential. Variables that affect your salary include your level of experience, the type of company that you work for and where you work.

  1. Experience

    • Salaries for dermatologists vary based on their level of experience. Beginning dermatologists with less than a year of experience report a salary range of $185,000 to $250,000 while those with one to four years of experience report a salary range of $128,400 to $225,500. Those with five to nine years of experience have incomes that generally fall between $120,000 and $255,300, according to Pay Scale. As of May 2010, dermatologists with 10 to 19 years of experience have some of the highest salaries with a reported range of $195,100 to $300,000.

    Employer Type

    • The type of company that a dermatologist works for also plays a role in their potential salary. Those working for private practices or firms have the highest variation in salaries with incomes generally falling between $145,000 and $265,100 according to Pay Scale. Those reporting working for hospitals have a salary range of $143,600 to $205,600 while employed by general companies have a salary range of $195,100 to $257,000, all as of May 2010. Some of the lowest paid dermatologists are those who work for themselves. They report a salary range of $177,900 to $205,600.

    Location

    • Salaries for dermatologists are not the same across the United States. As of May 2010, those working in California have some of the highest salaries. They report generally earning between $198,300 and $297,500. New York dermatologists also have some of the nation's highest salaries, with a range of $176,800 to $228,900 according to Pay Scale. Dermatologists in Pennsylvania report a salary range of $70,300 to $205,600 while those working in Florida report a salary range of $63,000 to $170,000.

    Benefits

    • Along with some of the highest salaries of all of the United States occupations, dermatologists also receive generous benefits. The most commonly reported one is a 401k plan as of May 2010. Many dermatologists also report receiving paid holidays and vacation time and/or malpractice/liability insurance. Paid sick leave and life/disability insurance is also relatively standard. Fewer dermatologists report receiving reimbursement for education, training or tuition costs according to Pay Scale.

    Bonuses

    • Bonuses are also very common for dermatologists. Those with less than a year of experience report receiving some of the largest bonuses with a median bonus of $40,000 according to Pay Scale. Those with one to four years of experience report a median bonus of $5,000 while those with five to nine years of experience virtually report the same thing. Dermatologists with 10 to 19 years of experience report a median bonus of $10,200.
