Sports management is a very broad career field, similar to that of a business career, combining the world of sports with the necessary business components. Careers in sports management encompass many laws, financial obligations, marketing needs and basic business principles to create successful sports events. All of these demands in the world of sports create different positions under the general title of sports management. A sports management degree can lead people into many different career paths.
Types of Jobs
Sports management is not a specific career, but a general title that opens the doors for many different career opportunities. Many people who work in sports management have other titles such as: sports agents, program directors, marketing agents, promotions managers, athletic directors, athletic secretaries, general managers, sales representatives, academic service counselors, broadcasters, game-day operations managers, coaches and publicists--just to name a few.
The responsibilities of a sports manager will vary depending on the actual title given to the position and the place of employment. The different levels of sports will also dictate the types of careers within sports management. High school sports do not have the same needs as professional sports, nor does hockey have the same needs as soccer.
Duties can range from basic management positions to owners of teams and publicists. Some sports managers create reports to predict the success of sports events, while others finalize the net profits earned from an event. Still others deal with media relations to coordinate advertisements and boost sales. Sports management is in many ways like business world management, except the business involves sports companies and franchises.
Many colleges across the country offer degrees in sports management. There are bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs to choose from. Most college programs use classes from the fields of education, business and marketing to design a curriculum for sports management majors. It is not mandatory that sports managers have a college degree; it is up to the individual companies to set their own requirements.
There is a wide range of salaries that can be expected in this field based on the experience, education and type of sports management position. Sports agents seem to make the most money because their earnings are based on the money their athletes receive when they sign professional contracts. Sports agents can earn anywhere from $200,000 to $28,000,000 annually. The average sports manager makes $35,000 to $65,000.
Careers in sports management are readily available in almost every region of the country. Employment is expected to increase by 23 percent by 2018, almost double the national occupational average.
