HR Admin Assistant Job Description
A human resources (HR) administrative assistant performs mostly clerical duties for a company's human resources department. An HR administrative assistant answers phones, responds to emails, faxes and files documents, and enters data into computers. Many are also responsible for keeping track of records related to their company's employees. That includes employee names, addresses, earnings and whether or not the employee is paid by mail or direct deposit.

Some have had prior experience working in an office setting as secretaries or receptionists, and others have even obtained a certificate or license from a vocational or trade school. Areas of study for HR administrative assistants typically include typing, computers and data entry. But usually a strong work ethic and positive attitude are as important as formal education for HR administrative assistants.

Because of an increase in computer software that provides automated record-keeping and data entry, jobs for HR administrative assistants are expected to decline slowly during the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, overall, employment of HR assistants is projected to fall off by 6 percent from 2008 to 2018, the BLS reported. That is compared to an 11 percent increase during the same span for administrative assistants in all industries.

HR assistants can potentially make a pretty good living, depending on industry, experience and overall responsibilities. According to PayScale.com, HR assistants earned anywhere from $28,000 to more than $50,000 per year in April 2010. Meanwhile, the BLS reported the median annual salary for HR assistants was $35,750 in May 2008.
