MLA style documentation was created by a group of scholars in the Modern Language Association, founded in 1883. The association publishes the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and the MLA Style Manual, which details the rules and usage of MLA style documentation. The Modern Language Association contains more than 30,000 members in 100 countries, and seeks to maintain consistent rules for academic research and scholarly integrity, playing host to yearly conventions to discuss various subjects related to scholarship and literature.

A Works Cited page and in-text citations are usually required for MLA style documentation. In-text citations follow the information quoted with the author's last name and page number in parentheses. The Works Cited page is attached to the end of the paper, with sources arranged in alphabetical order according to the author's name. Each source lists the author's name, the name of the source, the publisher and year published, and is double spaced with a hanging indent after the first line of each source. The paper should be typed, with Times New Roman 12 point font.
