Information on Puggles thumbnail
Puggles are a mix between a Pug and a Beagle.

Puggles are a hybrid or designer dog breed that is created by mixing a Pug with a Beagle. This breed was created in the 1980's when breeders began experimenting with mixing different dog breeds in order to create new, superior breeds. Puggles have become increasingly popular over the years because of their happy-go-lucky nature and cute appearance.

  1. Features

    • Puggles are a small dog breed, similar in size to beagles and pugs. They vary in height from 10 to 15 inches and weigh between 10 and 30 pounds. They have a thick, strong body and male Puggles tend to be larger and more muscular than females. The coat is short and dense. The hairs are straight and smooth. Puggles are available in a variety of colors including fawn, tan, black, white or tri-colored. The muzzle or "mask" is generally black, but may have some white scattered throughout the face. One of the advantages of the puggle breed is that the muzzle is larger than the pug's muzzle. This minimizes the risk of respiratory problems, which are common in the Pug breed.

    Function

    • Puggles make excellent family pets. They are a wonderful companion and are good around children and other pets. They enjoy human interaction, and it is not uncommon for puggles to follow their owner around the house in order to be with her at all times.

    Temperament

    • Puggles are extremely playful and happy dogs. They love attention and affection. Puggles are extremely intelligent, therefore they are usually easy to train and housebreak. They tend to be curious, a trait that is inherited from the Beagle who is known to track scents. They will bark to announce visitors, but otherwise are very friendly toward strangers. Puggles may occasionally howl. This is another trait that is common in beagles.

    Care

    • Puggles require minimal grooming. The coat requires a weekly brushing. This helps remove loose hairs and to distribute natural oils throughout the coat. This will keep the coat shiny and healthy. Puggles should be bathed only when necessary and no more than once a month. This will prevent the coat from becoming dry and brittle. Puggles have long, floppy ears so it is important to pay close attention to the ears when bathing. Drying the ears thoroughly will help prevent infections. Puggles are a high energy breed and require moderate exercise. They enjoy brisk walks and playing in an open area. If Puggles do no receive enough exercise, their excessive energy can lead to behavior problems.

    Considerations

    • Puggles can suffer from respiratory problems if they inherit the short muzzle of the Pug. They are prone to ear infections. Eye and skin infections are common in puggles because of the deep wrinkles and fold in the skin.
