Asthma in Beagles

Asthma in Beagles thumbnail
While it's not common in this breed, beagles can get asthma.

Beagles and other dogs are just as likely to get asthma as humans, though it's more frequent in older dogs. It is important for owners to know what to watch for. If you think your beagle has asthma, take him to the vet for a checkup. Early intervention will allow your dog to live happily and care-free, even with asthma.

  1. Signs

    • A beagle with asthma will wheeze and cough. If the attack becomes severe, the dog may have labored breathing and even blocked airways. Beagles might cough as they try and catch their breath.

    Symptoms

    • While symptoms may vary from dog to dog, they typically include weight loss, loss of appetite and lethargy. If the beagle has trouble breathing, his gums may turn blue.

    Causes

    • The most common cause of asthma in beagles is allergies. Sources of a dog's allergies can be air pollutants, cigarette smoke and even cat litter dust. Other causes can be conditions like worms, infections and cancer.

    Treatment

    • Once a beagle is diagnosed with asthma, the best course of action is to change the environment. A veterinarian can prescribe medication to help relieve the symptoms. Inhaler mists help ease breathing troubles in dogs. There are also injections that the owner can give that will reduce inflammation. The veterinarian may also prescribe oral medications in the form of steroids or antihistamines.

    Control

    • Keep your asthmatic dog's weight under control; overweight dogs have a harder time controlling asthma. Keep her immune system healthy and strong to ward off any future problems. Use a cold-mist humidifier to help keep the dog's environment from becoming too dry. A humidifier also helps clear up the breathing passageways.
