A road worker helps install and maintain road systems. In many communities, road work is conducted by public works or city employees who complete a variety of city projects. A more specific career centered on road work is "highway maintenance worker." In this role, your primary duties center on repairs and maintenance on highway roads.
Highway Maintenance Description
A highway road worker uses equipment like a jackhammer to tear apart roads, then uses equipment or hand tools to remove old asphalt and debris. The debris is loaded into dump trucks for hauling. Next, the worker helps grade and pave the new roadway. Simpler repair jobs may involve just fixing up potholes. Road workers also set up barriers and signs to alert drivers to road construction.
Education and Pay
You don't need formal education for some road work positions, though a construction or building trades diploma is helpful. Training on equipment like forklifts, rollers and large cleaning equipment prepares you for higher-level road crew positions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average pay for highway maintenance workers was $36,980 a year as of May 2013.
