Lawn technicians are the hands, feet and face of any professional lawn care business. Lawn technicians have to juggle many tasks outside of the laborious job of performing lawn maintenance. Lawn technicians aerate, mow, edge and perform color treatment for each customer's lawn. Additionally, lawn technicians must maintain the quality of the customer's relationship with the lawn care company.
The average lawn technician makes anywhere from $40,000 to $50,000 annually. Most lawn care companies utilize base salary plus commissions, meaning the technician is guaranteed a monthly salary plus a percentage of each individual lawn care service he provides.
Lawn technicians perform route lawn care services. The technicians are provided with their daily routes at the beginning of each day or at the end of the previous work day. The technicians are expected to complete their scheduled services by the end of each work day. This requires the lawn technician to become not only efficient at his job, but quick, so that he can finish each appointment promptly.
Lawn technicians must be able to lift heavy lawn maintenance equipment and material in and out of their service vehicles repetitively all day long. In addition to actually performing lawn maintenance services, lawn technicians are responsible for providing excellent customer service. A lawn care company's reputation hinges on its lawn technicians' ability to handle customer complaints in a timely and professional manner. This requires punctuality, professional demeanor and excellent social skills.
There is usually no previous education or training required for lawn technician positions other than the possession of a high school or general education diploma. The majority of a lawn technician's training happens on the job. However, all lawn technicians must pass a state pesticide exam.
Grounds maintenance positions are expected grow by 18 percent by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is a faster expected growth rate than that of any other occupation.
