Welder Helper Job Description
A position as a welder's helper is similar to that of an apprentice. A welder's helper assists a lead welder in all tasks and duties pertaining to welding metal and/or iron framework together while learning the skill of welding. A welder's helper may be required to pick up materials, clean the welding shop area and perform light maintenance on welding equipment.

A position as a welder's helper does not usually require much more than a high school diploma. However, you may be required to pass a state welding certification exam to become a lead welder. A position as a welder's assistant is considered on the job training which will prepare you for a career as lead welder.
Required Skills

A welder's helper should be able to lift heavy objects repeatedly and be able to follow both simple and complex instructions with little to no supervision.

Work Environment

Welders are often exposed to extreme and even dangerous working conditions. Welders are required to work in extreme heat and on scaffolding at very high elevations. Welders and welder's helper must wear safety shoes, goggles, gloves and masks designed for protection against the extreme heat from the welding torch during the welding process.

A welder's helper salary ranges from $25,000 to $60,000 annually as of 2010. This pay is largely dependent upon the location and years of experience as a welder's helper.
Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, welding jobs are not expected to grow much at all through 2018. However, welding job opportunities are expected to be available for experienced welders.
