Bellboys work at hotels.

Bellboys are also called bellhops and are usually employed at hotels. Many may begin their employment at a small hotel and advance into better positions at a larger hotel. They interact with guests and are important in maintaining positive guest relations. Becoming employed in this field doesn't require extensive training or education.

  1. Significance

    • Bellboys are responsible for carrying guests' luggage to their rooms. They may also be responsible for checking the room before the guest arrives. The bellhop may ensure that all amenities, such as the television or telephone, are operating properly. Any malfunctions are reported to maintenance to be repaired promptly before the guest arrives. When the guest checks out of the hotel, the bellboy may be summoned to carry the guest's luggage to the checkout area.

    Qualifications

    • A bellboy is required to have at least a high school diploma or GED. Most employers offer training to the new employees. The bellboy is usually trained by a bell captain, who may also be responsible for recording the bellboy's work hours. The bellboy may initially work as an elevator operator in larger hotels. Larger hotels may also require that the bellboy have previous experience.

    Skills

    • Bellboys should have good communication skills, because they are required to communicate with guests. They should be reliable and prompt when required to retrieve a guest's luggage. In addition, the bellboy must be professional and have a pleasant personality. They may also be required to resolve complaints from guests who aren't satisfied with the service.

    Features

    • In addition to their regular duties, bellboys may assist guests who are physically challenged by escorting them to their room. They may also assist at the front desk and place claim checks on luggage. Some bellboys run errands or pick up laundry. Bellboys may also be required to work weekends and holidays to accommodate guests.

    Salary

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, bellhops earned a median wage of $20,060 in May 2009. They also earn tips, which can help to supplement their salary. In addition, most employers offer bellboys benefits, such as insurance and paid vacations. Employers also provide uniforms.
