Business Etiquette in Cambodia
Cambodia's agriculture is appealing to professionals in many parts of the world, as the country's farmers grow large amounts of rice, corn and cashews. Tourism is also very popular in the country, so visitors from all over are welcome. This includes professional visitors, which is why learning Cambodian business etiquette is so important.

Business Attire
-
In Cambodia, men are not usually required to wear a formal business suit---slacks and a collared shirt are often sufficient. However, it is best for men to bring a jacket and tie when doing business in Cambodia, since they may be more suitable to wear to a dinner with colleagues. Professional Cambodian women are expected to wear skirts to their ankles in the workplace, with a blouse. If a woman wears pants to a business meeting, she should wear a matching blazer as well. Both men and women are expected to be well-groomed when coming to the office.
Punctuality and Business Meetings
-
When doing business in Cambodia, it is best to arrive on time for business meetings, even if the meeting does not start exactly when scheduled. When beginning a professional discussion, it is best to refer to the person with the highest professional rank first. This individual should also be responsible for guiding the conversation. Exhibiting patience is very important to Cambodian professionals. Refrain from interrupting another colleague, and do not show any displeasure or aggravation when meetings run over time.

Negotiations
-
During professional negotiations, Cambodian businesspeople are very reluctant to use the word "no." Responses such as "that would be difficult" and "maybe" are very common, even when the actual answer is "no." It is also considered inappropriate for professionals to show extreme emotions during the negotiation process. This is a sign of weakness in Cambodia, and will result in the international professional making a bad impression. Being overly persuasive is also looked down upon in Cambodia. When negotiating, make an offer, state the reasons why the offer would be attractive, and let Cambodian professionals make a decision without being pressured.
Business Cards and Professional Titles
-
It is acceptable to exchange business cards at the beginning of a meeting in Cambodia. The business card should always be given with the right hand. When handing a business card to a person who has a high professional rank, it is proper etiquette to use the fingers of the left hand to hold the right elbow up. Addressing professionals by their honorific, or by Mr./Ms./Mrs. and last name is best, both when giving and receiving business cards, and during any professional exchange. Cambodians may also use the terms "Lok" (male) or "Lok Srey" (female) followed by the professional's first name, or first and last name.
Giving Gifts
-
It is acceptable to give a small gift at an initial Cambodian business meeting, although this is not required. A bouquet of flowers or a basket of fruit are appropriate gifts. Express thanks to the Cambodian professional for his time. A larger fruit basket, as well as quality candies or pastries, are ideal gifts to present the host of the home when invited for dinner. Gifts should always be wrapped and presented with the right hand; if the gift is particularly large, it can be presented with both hands.
