PR Executive Job Description


The role of a public relations (PR) executive is to manage the reputation of a company, organization or individual. A PR executive may work for an agency and offer services to a wide range of clients on a freelance basis. Alternatively, some larger companies employ a public relations team to manage communication between the company and media. The world of public relations is growing at a fast pace and competition for job roles is becoming ever more competitive.


  • Most PR executive jobs require a public relations, journalism, marketing, or communications college degree. With many public relations companies using more online tactics to reach targeted audiences, a degree in electronic journalism could be valuable. Many students studying relevant degrees will also undertake an internship at a PR firm, which is an excellent way of gaining employment after graduation.


  • The role of PR executive requires writing press releases and other materials, time-keeping skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines. PR executives are expected to be excellent writers, confident communicators, problem solvers and quick thinkers. Many of the skills required such as the ability to write a successful press release will be learned though related college courses and internships.

Working Environment

  • Because of the strict deadlines involved, this job is often stressful and demanding. Most PR executives are based in busy office environments, although are frequently expected to attend meetings and appointments outside of the office. The role varies but much time will usually be spent in strategy planning and dealing with the media.


  • Hours in this job are often long and unpredictable. Although usually the role involves typical office working hours, PR executives often work in excess of 40 hours per week. There may also be emergency occasions where schedules need to be rearranged in order for workers to meet deadlines.


  • The salary for a PR executive reflects the stressful nature of the role. The average annual wages for salaried public relations specialists were $51,280 in May 2008. However the top 10 percent earned over $97,910.
