Branch Manager Job Descriptions
The branch manager of a bank is responsible for the everyday operations of that particular banking location. Responsibilities include daily operations, customer service, staff management and even the creation of bank policies for the specific location. In essence, the manager acts much like managers at other types of retail and business locations, directing the daily business of that location.
-
Employee Management
-
Branch managers must ensure that all departments within their location are staffed with knowledgeable employees. The departments for staffing include everyone from tellers, loan officers and personal bankers to armored truck services and custodial services. Branch managers must also perform tasks, such as firing employees and providing additional training on new materials and refresher courses on existing materials for their employees. They are also responsible for helping in the determination of raises, while providing employee reviews, motivation and coaching through disputes.
Customer Retention and Growth
-
Branch managers are responsible for providing customer service that ensures current customers stay with their banking institution, while proving opportunities for new customers to join the bank. Typically, managers must meet specific goals set by their corporate office, while setting their own personal branch goals. Retention of customers, new business sales and referrals are all important aspects.
-
Corporate Recommendations For Policies
-
Branch managers are also expected to follow trending in their own geographical area, such as seeking out types of policies customers are looking for and recommending possible changes to policies and practices at the corporate level. These policies can range from new financial service packages to suggesting changes to current options. They may also suggest new goals for their location and other locations based on current market conditions.
Cross Promotion Of Banking Objectives
-
Branch managers must also work closely with other branch managers to ensure all possible business opportunities are explored. For example, deals formed with large corporations with various locations can best be serviced by branches closer to those other locations. Branch managers also work with their fellow managers and senior management to share business ideas, form "best practices" and share their own effective practice strategies. They also seek guidance from other managers and top-level management to ensure their location is up to the same standards expected by the company's corporate offices.
Community Involvement
-
The branch manager is also responsible for extending the bank's visibility in the community. This visibility can come in many forms, such as sponsoring local sports teams to donating money for charity events. Managers receive various requests from the community and must decide which opportunities to sponsor, based on what is best for the community and for the branch location.
