Affiliate managers are responsible for the management of online affiliate programs. These managers help find new accounts, keep current accounts active through customer service "best practices" and develop new affiliate programs with access to needed marketing tools for their customer base. While the responsibilities of an affiliate manager will vary slightly based on the company he works for, the basic principles behind requirements remain unchanged.
Affiliate Sales Role
Affiliate managers work to find new websites, email marketing firms and other online resources that are willing to feature the products they are attempting to sell. Affiliate managers work with companies to set acceptable cost per sale numbers to ensure both companies operate at acceptable levels. For example, an affiliate manager may offer 3 percent of a sale to a small customer and 5 percent to a larger firm. In this role, traditional sales practices typically apply.
Creating Marketing Tools
Affiliate managers will often oversee the creation of sales tools that benefit their affiliate partners. This creation process may include sales copy for websites, new advertising banners for the products within their networks and other marketing tools that help their partners sell the products they represent. Affiliate managers will also offer an open field of communication where they will answer marketing questions as needed.
Customer Retention Focus
Affiliate managers must attempt to keep as many active customers as possible. To obtain this goal, they are often responsible for creating new campaigns to keep content "fresh" for affiliates, while providing incentive packages to top performing clients and offering bonuses based on a variety of performance-based initiatives, such as bonuses to top sellers, most improved sales team, etc.
Attending Trade Shows
Affiliate managers are often required to attend trade shows that focus on the products they sell and the industries they represent. For example, the A4U Expo features some of the world's top affiliate companies and websites that market heavily through the use of affiliate marketing.
Basic Customer Service
Affiliate managers are the first point of contact for customers. They are responsible for answering any questions their clients may have including information about marketing materials, financial information and any other questions. The affiliate manager must keep clients happy and return calls and emails in a timely manner.
