Can Ceramic Tile Be Stained?

Can Ceramic Tile Be Stained? thumbnail
Ceramic tile has a glaze to resist stains, but its grout is susceptible.

Ceramic tile is popular among homeowners for decorating floors, countertops and walls in kitchens or bathrooms. Ceramic tile has several advantages. It is less expensive than stone options, but is of higher quality than vinyl options. It lasts a long time and also has many different color and design options. While some types of ceramic tile can be stained, they generally are protected against most types of stain. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ceramic Tile

    • Ceramic tiles start out as clay that is fit into molds to make them the proper shape. They are then fired to harden them, giving them the shape they hold for the rest of their useful lives. This makes ceramics tile very similar to stone, although they are thinner and more fragile.

    Glazes

    • Instead of being painted or sealed after being fired, ceramic tiles are glazed. A layer of glaze is put over the tile before it is placed in the oven. The glaze is then baked into the surface of the clay, where it blocks up the porous material and makes the surface smooth and glossy. Glazes are also used to give ceramic tile color. These glazes are the reason that ceramic tiles so stain-resistant.

    Grout

    • Grout is the substance that is used to fill the empty spaces between the tiles. It can be either sanded or smooth, but grout used on ceramic tile is generally sanded for extra durability. This grout is not protected in the same way that glazed tile is, so it can be stained much more easily. Grout actually darkens over time because it is so susceptible to moisture and dust in the air. Sealants are used to protect grout lines.

    Mold

    • The glaze on ceramic tiles protects them from common spills that would have stained more porous material. Normal stains are easily cleaned up on tile. However, they are still susceptible to other types staining, especially those caused by mold and mildew. In showers, the mold often starts in the grout tiles, then works its work across the tile. A steam cleaning or strong cleaner can usually remove common bathroom molds on glazed tile.

    Positive Staining

    • Ceramic tile can only be stained by owners if the tile is not glazed. The glaze that ceramic tiles have naturally protects them, and does not allow for any artistic stains. If the tiles are not glazed, they must be sealed anyway and homeowners have the opportunity to apply their own stains. Grout can also be stained, and it's common to stain grout a darker color to match new tile plans.
