The linden tree (Tilia spp), also known as the lime tree or basswood, is known for its ability to develop in urban areas in Europe, eastern North America and Asia. It was also considered a sacred tree at one time; destroying it could be punished by death.
According to legend, the Linden tree was considered sacred due to the bees desire for them and the quality of the honey produced. It was even nicknamed the bee tree. The tree was thought to symbolize divine power, love and luck.
The extracts from the blossoms of the linden tree have been used for medicinal purposes, especially for muscle contractions. Adults ingest it through tea, tincture or liquid extracts. The extracts serve as a diuretic, so if a person was already taking something for that, they could be in danger of dehydration. It is also used both as a stimulant and a sedative. Usage depends on the country and if being used in a traditional or alternative medical arena.
There are over 30 variations to the linden tree. The American version is known as basswood. It is part of the Tiliaceae botanicial family.
The linden tree is a preferred tree in some areas because of its quick growth and longevity (1,000 years). It is considered a shade tree and is used to line streets.
In Roman mythology the linden tree was thought to represent fidelity and conjugal love. They are also thought to be married to tree spirits.
