Vasomotor Rhinitis Pain

Vasomotor rhinitis, or nonallergic rhinitis, is a medical condition that causes sneezing, a runny nose and congestion of the nasal passages. People with this condition have constant watery nasal drainage. Nonallergic rhinitis is not caused by an infection, but it may cause serious complications. Patients with vasomotor rhinitis may experience pain if they develop complications such as sinusitis or an ear infection.

  1. Vasomotor Rhinitis

    • Vasomotor rhinitis sufferers experience nasal symptoms that are not caused by an allergy. People develop symptoms of this condition in response to environmental triggers that cause irritation in the nose, such as spicy foods, air pollution or dry air. Alcohol also can trigger vasomotor rhinitis, and this condition may be a side effect of some medications as well. Physicians give allergy tests to patients to be sure they do not have allergic rhinitis. The condition may be treated with nasal sprays, decongestants and antihistamines.

    Sinusitis

    • Sinusitis is a common complication of vasomotor rhinitis that is caused by a bacterial, viral or fungal infection of the sinuses. Sinusitis may cause several types of pain, including a headache behind the eyes, facial pain and a sore throat. Nasal congestion, fatigue and fever may occur with this condition. Sinus congestion and the accumulation of mucus in the sinuses provide a favorable environment for bacteria and other causes of sinusitis to grow.

    Sinusitis Treatment

    • Individuals with sinusitis pain may take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain relief. Sinusitis sufferers should avoid activities and environmental conditions that can worsen pain, such as air travel and sudden temperature changes or temperature extremes . Doctors may treat severe cases of bacterial sinusitis with antibiotics. Nasal saline sprays, home humidifier use and drinking plenty of liquids can reduce sinus inflammation and pain.

    Ear Infection

    • People with vasomotor rhinitis may develop an infection of the middle ear from nasal congestion. An ear infection causes fluid to accumulate behind the eardrum. Ear infection patients may experience earaches and related pain in the ear. A feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss in an affected ear and gastrointestinal effects such as diarrhea or vomiting may occur with an ear infection. Individuals with ear pain should see a doctor as soon as possible.

    Ear Infection Treatment

    • Doctors treat bacterial ear infections with a course of antibiotics. Patients may apply a warm water bottle or warm cloth to an affected ear to relieve pain and inflammation. Pain relief ear drops are available over the counter and may reduce ear infection pain. Doctors may prescribe ear drop medication for pain symptoms. Oral nonprescription pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may provide ear symptom relief.
