Job Description for a Director of Housekeeping


The cleanliness of a hotel or hospital can have a significant impact on its operations. Potential patrons avoid hotels with online reviews that note dirty rooms or public areas, and inspectors may penalize health care facilities that don't meet cleanliness regulations. A director of housekeeping makes sure high cleaning standards are maintained in a hotel, hospital, long-term care facility or similar setting.


  • A director of housekeeping hires, trains, evaluates and disciplines housekeeping staff. He develops their work schedules and inspects their work to make sure they are meeting the facility's cleanliness expectations. He ensures their attendance at the company's safety training sessions. In a health care setting, the director also makes sure staff complies with infection-control procedures.

    The director orders supplies, manages a budget and produces reports. He processes invoices and approves employee timesheets. The director also oversees the facility's lost-and-found department and responds to guest complaints. He reports items in need of repair or maintenance.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Employers want a director of housekeeping to have strong communication, customer service and management abilities. Directors need basic computer skills and should be familiar with applicable local, state and federal regulations. They should also understand how to use cleaning chemicals safely. In some positions, the ability to speak both English and Spanish is a plus.

Personal Traits

  • A director of housekeeping needs a desire for excellence and a willingness to work weekends and/or holidays. Employers look for applicants with high ethical standards and a professional demeanor. They want someone who can succeed in a fast-paced environment and exercise good judgment.

Education and Experience

  • Some companies expect the director of housekeeping to have a bachelor's degree, but many others require only a high school diploma or GED. Employers may look for applicants who have at least two years of housekeeping management experience.


  • Research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows housekeeping directors make an average of $17.88 an hour of $37,180 per year as of May 2009. States paying the highest wages to these workers were New York, Rhode Island and New Jersey.
