About The Program
-
The Center for Prehospital Care is part of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The center is internationally recognized as a leader in prehospital research and education. Students of the phlebotomy course receive extensive training to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be a successful phlebotomist. Phlebotomy students can receive assistance, including mentorship and tutoring, at any time during the course from the experienced faculty and staff. The phlebotomy program is accredited by the State of California Public Health Laboratory Field Services.
Course Description
-
The course is eight weeks long and consists of didactic (classroom) and clinical (in hospital) training. The didactic studies involve lectures, presentations, simulations and skill labs to train students to draw blood from patients. Prior to beginning clinical training, students practice venipuncture on manikins and then practice on each other. Students begin drawing blood on actual patients during the third week of class when the clinical training begins. Clinical training rotates students through affiliated community clinics and UCLA hospitals where students work under direct supervision of a licensed preceptor.
