The National Rail Policy on Pushchairs

The National Rail Policy on Pushchairs thumbnail
Next time you travel, take along the pushchair.

The National Rail Network is the British entity charged with coordinating train transportation throughout Great Britain and, as such, sets policy for the whole island's train luggage restrictions. When it comes to babies and the equipment they take to maintain when you are out of town, you can trust National Rail's policies to help anxious parents deal with pushchairs, nappy bags and baby food appropriately.

  1. Cabin Luggage

    • Per National Rail policy, pushchairs are permitted as hand luggage in the passenger cabins at no extra charge. Keep all pushchairs safely maintained and stowed out of the aisles while traveling.

    Responsibility

    • Storing pushchairs in the passenger accommodations, although perfectly acceptable, requires you to take responsibility for the item if lost, stolen or damaged. Additionally, liability for injury or damage to others caused by your pushcart rests with you.

    Obstruction

    • In the case that your pushchair obstructs aisles or doorways, it may be rejected from passenger cars by staff. This is possible when the train is completely full. The staff will then try to accommodate your pushchair in a luggage van.

    Forgotten Pushchairs

    • When a train company stores forgotten luggage, such as a pushchair, they may charge up to £2 per day for storage at the station, where they will dispose of it after three months, if it remains unclaimed.

    Affected Train Companies

    • National Rail policy is standard amongst British train companies including, Arriva, c2c, East Midlands Trains, First Capital Connect, First Greater Western, ScotRail, TransPennine Express, Grand Central, Hull Trains, London Midland, London Overground, Southeastern, National Express East Anglia, Stansted Express, Merseyrail Electrics, Southern, Northern Rail, NXEC Trains, South West Trains, Island Line, Chiltern Railway Company, Wrexham, Shropshire and Marylebone Railway, West Coast Trains and XC Trains. Each of these companies shares the same pushcart policy.
