MS Word 2000 is a popular word processing program.

MS Word for Windows is a word processing program developed by Microsoft for the Windows operating system. Microsoft Word 2000 was the sixth version of MS Word for Windows. MS Word 2000 was released in 1999 as part of the MS Office 2000 Suite, and was replaced in 2001 by MS Word 2002, also known as MS Word XP. The current version of MS Word, as of May 2010, is MS Word 2007.

  1. History of MS Word

    • MS Word was created in 1981 as an MS-DOS program. The first Windows version of MS Word appeared in 1989. Version 2 was released in 1991. In 1993, the third version was named "MS Word Version 6." The purpose of this new numbering convention was so that the Windows version number would match the version number for the MS-DOS and Macintosh versions of Word. Because of this numbering convention, MS Word 2000 is officially referred to as Version 9, even though it is the sixth version that Microsoft released.

    File extensions

    • Word documents are saved in files with the extension ".doc." The latest version of Word, Word 2007, uses the extension ".docx," signifying an open XML format.

    Features of MS Word 2000

    • MS Word 2000 had several features that were not part of earlier versions of Word. MS Word 2000 had a thesaurus, allowed pictures to be used as bullets, and had a "Discussions" feature that allowed several users to collaborate on a single document. MS Word 2000 could also create tables containing nested tables, enabled text to be wrapped around a picture, and could be used as an email editor.

    Support for MS Word 2000

    • Microsoft discontinued basic support for MS Word 2000 in 2004. Extended support for MS Word 2000 was discontinued in 2009.

    Compatibility of MS Word Versions

    • When a document is created in a particular version of MS Word, an earlier version of Word may not be able to open the document. Later versions of Word, including MS Word 2000, give users the option of saving the document as an earlier version of Word. For example, if a document is created on Word 2007, it can be saved as if it was created on Word 2000. While this will allow the document to be opened in Word 2000, the document will lose any features specific to Word 2007.
