The September flower and birthstone are both traditionally in the blue color family. However, they can also be pink, yellow and white, among others. The September birthstone is the sapphire, while the flower is the aster. The aster is also known as the morning glory.

Sapphires are traditionally thought of as deep blue gemstones, though they can also be found in pink, yellow and white. It is suggested that giving a person a birthstone to wear offers them protection and luck. Sapphires are also associated with the attributes of sincerity and truth.

The morning glory is also traditionally blue. The September flower is the morning glory, or aster. Morning glories symbolize valor, faith and love. As with sapphires, morning glories can also be found in a variety of colors besides their traditional blue, including mauve, lilac, white, red and pink. The word aster comes from the Greek word for star, which describes the shape of the flower itself.

Sapphires other than blue are known as fancy sapphires. Sapphires are mined in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Kasmir, Nigeria, Kenya, China, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, the United States and Burma. The traditional blue color of sapphires has long had a symbolic meaning in religion. Blue is traditionally associated with heavenly grace. Sapphires that come in other colors are sometimes referred to as fancy sapphires.
History & Significance of Morning Glories

Asters conveyed messages during the Victorian era. The meaning of flowers came about largely during the Victorian era, when the showing of affection was taboo. Lovers could send flowers to convey messages to the recipients, and the hidden message of the aster was "Take care of yourself for me." Morning glories are often found in wedding bouquets and sent to new parents to congratulate them on the birth of a new baby. The morning glory is also sent on September 11 to commemorate Patriot Day.
