Canoe Instructor Certification

Canoe Instructor Certification thumbnail
Canoe instructors can become certified in different disciplines and at different levels.

Becoming a certified canoe instructor gives credibility to anyone interested in teaching courses in canoeing or those wanting to guide clients. Having this credential shows that you are an experienced canoeist with extensive knowledge of canoeing and safety. In the United States, the largest and most recognized certification body is the American Canoe Association. Founded in 1880, the ACA has become the preeminent certification body for canoe instructors in America. The ACA has certified over 4,000 instructors that provide courses in canoeing as well as kayaking, rafting as well as safety and rescue techniques to more than 800,000 students annually.

  1. Types of Certification

    • Canoe instructors can become certified in different disciplines and at different levels. Each level of certification focuses on more advanced skills. There are three levels of certification for canoe touring and five for river canoeing. You can also become certified in river safety and rescue. There is a certification for instructors in adaptive paddling. These are techniques for paddler with special needs.

Basic Requirements for all ACA Instructors

    • All candidates for ACA certification as canoe instructors have to be 18 years old and must have and maintain a current CPR/first aide or wilderness first aide certification appropriate for the age group you will be instructing. It is also required that you be a member in good standing of the ACA and be listed in the Safety Education and Instruction Council (SEIC) registry. Candidates will be required to attend a workshop and pass an exam as well as demonstrate the skills required. You will also be expected to demonstrate effective communication and teaching skills.

    Re-Certification

    • Canoe instructor certification last for four years. During the four-year period certified canoe instructs must maintain their membership in the ACA and listing in the SEIC registry. You will also be expected to have taught and documented at least two classes. One of them must have been at your highest level of certification during the four-year certification period. You will have to complete one of the following: participate in an instructor update by either attending an instructor update, assist an instructor trainer in an instructor development workshop or instructor certification exam, complete an approved endorsement, co-teach a course with an instructor trainer. All of these must be done at your highest level of certification.

    Furthering Your Certification

    • Canoe instructors are trained and evaluated by instructor trainers who hold instructor development workshops and exams. Instructor trainers also evaluate instructors to make sure they meet the requirements of a certified canoe instructor. Instructor trainer educators provide training and evaluation of instructor trainers. Persons holding these levels of certification are considered to be the best paddlers and to be top-notch educators. They must pass a rigorous training and evaluation process before they receiving these credentials.

    Locating an Instructor Trainer

    • Instructor trainers are located throughout the United States and abroad. Using the ACA website you can locate an instructor trainer by zipcode, downloading a complete list in a PDF file or by finding a paddle school or club. The ACA works with the YMCA, so your local YMCA may offer courses in your area.

One Other Certification Body to Note

    • The British Canoe Union, started in 1936 to send a team to the Olympics, has grown into a worldwide organization. The BCU is recognized as an authoritative source of knowledge and training for canoeist. The BCU offers multiple levels of certification with quality guidelines that focus on knowledge of canoeing and safety. The BCU is considered an organization that provides top quality instructor training and certification.
