Membership Sales Job Description

A career in membership sales can be a rewarding position for the right candidate. Membership sales positions are fast paced and results driven. Designed for candidates who can sell eyeglasses to a blind man, efficient sales associates can expect to excel in this type of position. Membership sales positions are a good match for effective communicators, but one should keep company expectations and quotas in mind before committing to sell for them.

  • A membership sales associate's primary function is to recruit and interact with clients for her company. Associates act as a liaison between existing members and the company with which they are affiliated. Typically, they are called on to answer questions, deal with complaints and keep their company's member list at capacity. Membership sales associates spend most of their day talking--whether on the phone or in person. Typically, associates are also called upon to perform secretarial duties such as filing and email correspondence.

  • Membership sales associates work in several job markets, including fitness, education and recreation. Both private and public athletic clubs employ sales staff members. Sales associates for gyms typically interact with anyone who has opted into a "free trial" and current members who have not renewed their memberships. Weight loss companies with renewable products such as meal plans also rely on membership sales associates to keep their business flowing.

Those who call or contact an online university or program are put in touch with a membership sales associate. In addition to trying to find callers an appropriate program of study, associates are prepared to get students to sign up immediately. Country clubs and other private establishments always need staff members who can close the deal.

  • Employers look for sales team members who are persuasive, results driven and able to think on their feet. Required previous experience will vary depending on the company. Relevant experience is always a plus, but ultimately, showing the aforementioned skills in your interview is integral to securing this type of position.

  • Membership sales positions are most rewarding for candidates with a high aptitude for selling. Some employers will offer a base salary that can start as low as minimum wage. The benefit of sales positions is that they typically offer some sort of commission. In many cases wages are made up of a combination of a base salary and commission. Few positions are based solely on commission. Pay scales for membership sales jobs ultimately depend on the market you are working in.

  • Membership sales associates often receive benefits, such as membership/discounts, unlimited earning potential and the chance to work in an interactive environment. Employees often receive the services that they are selling for free or at a great discount. For those who have the aptitude, commission-based jobs can provide a strong source of income and, for those who prefer the stability of a 9 to 5 job but enjoy working with people, this field is an effective compromise.

  • Be wary of sales positions that pay commission only. If your selling skills are strong, you may be able to make living wages on commission only, but times can get tough when memberships dwindle due to financial hardships or off-seasons.
