Car rental agents work with customers who need a vehicle for a short period of time. In renting cars to clients, car rental agents perform a variety of customer service duties. The opportunity for employment as a car rental agent exists all around the country, in small and large cities.
Getting the Job Done
Car rental agents qualify customers to rent vehicles and help customers choose an appropriate car to rent. They also handle payments, sell rental insurance to customers, clean cars and fill them with gas. Those in management positions may also hire and train employees and process claims for damaged rentals.
Getting the Needed Skills
Car rental employers typically provide training, and no other specialized training is generally needed. Some car rental employers prefer that job candidates have prior sales or retail experience. Most rental agents will need a driver's license, as they will have to move cars into their appropriate areas of the lot and take them to be cleaned and serviced.
Getting the Appropriate Education
No formal education or degree is needed is become a car rental agent, although a high school diploma is required by most employers. Generally, car leasing agents have to be at least 18 years old. If you want to obtain a management position in a car rental company, an associate or bachelor's degree will make you a more competitive job candidate.
Getting to the Right Environment
Car rental agents work wherever a car rental lot or station is, which tends to be at airports, downtown areas of larger cities, near car dealerships and auto repair centers. Some automobile insurance companies and repair and collision centers also hire car rental agents, if they have a car rental lot as part of their business.
Getting Those Dollars
The amount a car rental agent earns varies by location and experience. In 2012, the average salary for a car rental agent was $26,500 annually, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. .
