Adobe Reader 8 Vs. 9

Adobe Reader, originally known as Adobe Acrobat Reader, is Adobe's proprietary software for reading their Portable Document Format (PDF). Adobe Reader can only read PDF files, while the Adobe Acrobat Professional edition is needed to edit and create PDFs with full functionality. Adobe released the PDF and accompanying Acrobat software during the beginning of the 90s, amidst much competition. PDF and the accompanying Adobe Reader are now the de facto standard for document formats.

  1. Version 8 History

    • Version 8 of Adobe Acrobat Reader was released in late 2006. The first update, Reader 8.1 released in June 2007, introduced support for Microsoft Office 2007, 64-bit Windows operating systems, and Windows Vista. The second update, 8.2, was released in January 2010, with subsequent minor updates released in February and April.

    Version 8 New Features

    • Version 8 of the Adobe Acrobat featured a redefined new user interface, easing processes such as PDF combination, signing PDF files and securing documents. Version 8 introduced connectivity and interactivity with Acrobat Connect, a web-based application that allowed for multi-user interactivity.

    Version 9 History

    • Version 9 of Adobe Acrobat Reader, released in July 2008, saw the first major update since 2006's Version 8 release. The first update, released in March 2009 improved stability and workflow issues. The second update, 9.2, released in October 2009 included support for Windows 7.9.3 and fixed detected security flaws with the software, as did subsequent minor patches released until April 2010.

    Version 9 New Features

    • Version 9 of the Adobe Acrobat introduced native support for Adobe Flash, and most importantly the ability to co-edit a PDF file simultaneously with another computer. PDF Portfolios were introduced which enable allow for a multitude of multimedia to be introduced into single compressed PDF files. PDF Portfolio is particularly geared towards inner-office multimedia transfer, as it allows different departments to quickly access different forms of data and rearrange the data as required and described.

    Version 8 Vs. Version 9

    • The differences between version 8 and 9 of the Adobe Reader are very minor compared to the differences between the authoring-backend Adobe Acrobat Professional software. Adobe Reader 9, while including natural bug fixes associated with new software versions, also mimics its parent Acrobat Professional software and includes better Flash support. If you need a PDF reader with better and more integrated Flash support, then upgrade to version 9, but otherwise the differences are slight, with both versions effectively operating in the same way.
