Bluetooth Mouse Facts
Bluetooth mice are a popular computer accessory that connect to computers using a radio frequency sent from the computer rather than traditional wires. Once paired with your computer, the mice can perform all of the same functions a traditional computer mouse does.
-
Function
-
Bluetooth mice are essentially exactly the same as traditional wired computer mice except in how they connect to the computer. Bluetooth mice can be used to navigate through webpages, select items off your desktop and perform any other functions on your computer that you would typically use a mouse for.
Benefits
-
The wireless technology can reduce wire clutter on your computer desk, and can also allow you to use your mouse from nontraditional locations that are not necessarily right beside your computer. For instance, you could use a Bluetooth mouse while sitting on your couch to navigate through menus on a computer connected to your home television.
-
Considerations
-
Bluetooth mice will need to be paired with your computer before they can be used. In order to pair your mouse with your computer, your computer will have to have built-in Bluetooth capabilities, or you will need to purchase an a Bluetooth USB dongle in order to add Bluetooth functionality to your computer.
Warning
-
Bluetooth mice whave a range of 15 to 33 feet (depending on the manufacturer). You will need to keep your mouse within that range in order to use it with your computer. Bluetooth mice also require batteries to operate. If the mouse is not powered off between uses, you can easily drain your battery power in just a few days. Traditional mice do not require batteries because they are powered from the USB port on your computer.
Pricing
-
Bluetooth mice are available in a variety of different designs and price points. Pricing differences are typically attributed to the range of mouse as well as whether it uses a trackball (cheaper) or laser technology (more expensive). The average price for a PC Bluetooth mouse is around $50, while the Apple Magic Mouse is priced at $69 (as of May 2010).
