Dogs can develop spinal arthritis as they age.

Canine spinal arthritis is a condition that often develops as a result of aging, although it may occur at any age. Dogs that suffer from this condition often have difficulty climbing stairs or running due to the pain and inflammation in the spine.

  1. Identification

    • Spinal arthritis is caused by inflammation inside the joints and discs of the spine. According to Long Beach Animal Hospital, dogs may develop several types of arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, immune mediated joint disease and crystal induced joint disease. These arthritic conditions are more common in dogs than cats and are progressive diseases that worsen over time.

    Symptoms

    • The symptoms associated with canine spinal arthritis may include pain, stiffness, difficulty running, stiffness after rest, difficulty climbing stairs and jumping. Dogs that suffer from spinal arthritis may experience an exacerbation in symptoms during cold weather and damp conditions.

    Causes

    • According to Long Beach Animal Hospital, the most common causes of canine spinal arthritis are genetic predisposition, obesity, trauma, immune reactions, poor nutrition and overexercising. Some breeds such as the dachshund, may be at an increased risk of developing arthritis due to their bone structure.

    Diagnosis

    • In order to diagnose canine spinal arthritis, your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and take a health history of your dog. Diagnostic tests such as X-rays may also be helpful in confirming the diagnosis and determining the severity of the condition.

    Treatment

    • The treatments for spinal arthritis in dogs may include moderate exercise and NSAID pain medicines to treat the pain and inflammation in the joints. Vet Info states that weight management is an important part of controlling the symptoms of spinal arthritis. Dogs that are overweight have more stress on their joints than dogs of normal weight. Obesity can lead to a more rapid progression of arthritis in dogs.
