HVAC certification can be obtained online.

HVAC mechanics and technicians are often required to take state certification exams in order to legally work in the HVAC field. Each state has its own rules for HVAC certification. There are many junior colleges and trade schools that offer programs in HVAC. Some online universities offer training and certification in HVAC. Your state regulations and previous HVAC experience will determine which type of training and certifications you should obtain.

  1. About HVAC

    • HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. A HVAC technician is a specially trained mechanic who services HVAC systems. In order to work as a HVAC mechanic, you must first obtain a state certification. There are many options for education and training in the field of HVAC. A few online schools offer online HVAC training and preparation for state certification.

    State Certification

    • Every state has its own regulations as it relates to HVAC certification. Check with your local and state electrical board for information on the state certification you need to work as an HVAC technician in your area. According to Brighthub.com, there are some states that have no certification requirements, like Pennsylvania. Other states, like Texas, handle HVAC certification locally and still other states offer certification testing on the state level only.

    Licensure

    • There are several licenses that an HVAC technician with one to two years of experience can obtain. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, some licenses are beneficial in advancing an HVAC technician's career and marketability. Although there is no uniform certification for HVAC within the United States, there is a well-known certification program called the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification. Some states may have licenses that are required in addition to certifications. Any HVAC technician who works with refrigerants must take special testing to secure a license for refrigeration specialization

    Education and Training

    • Many trade schools and technical schools offer programs in HVAC, as do community colleges. Most programs take six months to one year to complete. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, many HVAC techs become trained during their service in the military.

    Online Certification

    • There are two online schools considered the best in the business for obtaining online HVAC certification. The two schools are both accredited and both offer an HVAC certification program; however one is more intense, and therefore much more expensive. The Penn Foster Career School offers a program for under $700. This program covers the basics and is intended for experienced HVAC techs to refresh their skills. The Penn Forster program will also make the technician eligible to take the new EPA exam, ensuring environmentally safe practices in HVAC repair. George Mason University has an online program chosen by NATE as the best program. The 320-hour course is intended for those with little experience in the field. For a little over $3,000, this course will prepare a person to take the NATE exam upon completion.
