Cosmetologists work long hours on their feet to make their customers feel beautiful. Their services include hair shampooing and conditioning, cutting and styling, dyeing and coloring. Some cosmetologists also apply make-up, and perform manicures and pedicures. The science of cosmetology is highly specialized; individuals who want to enter the profession will have to undergo nine to 24 months of classroom education and hands-on practical training. In addition to cosmetology school, future cosmetologists must also meet certain physical and mental requirements, as well as pass a state licensing examination.

State boards of cosmetology have varying requirements for students applying to cosmetology school. Most states require applicants to be at least 16 years of age; some require applicants to be at 18. A few schools accept students with only an eighth grade education; most require applicants to have earned a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

States have varying length requirements for cosmetology training. Most states, such as Kansas, require an average of 1,500 hours. New Mexico requires students to obtain 1,600 hours and North Dakota requires 1800 of hours of instruction before course completion.

Cosmetology licensure is granted once graduates pass a series of written and practical examinations. Most states use the standardized tests administered by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). Testing will consist of written examinations on theory and procedure, and a practical exam for a maximum of eight core services; some states also require examinees to pass a test on the state rules and regulations regarding cosmetology. According to Education-portal.com, the written test will include questions on anatomy and physiology, nutrition, chemistry, electricity, ergonomics and infection control, as well as skin, nail and hair care services, including washing and conditioning, styling and cutting, braiding, wigs and extensions. For the practical portion, students must use mannequins to demonstrate certain hair services, such as coloring, straightening and cutting.
