They work closely with clients to overcome their barriers to employment; while partnering with organizations to provide resources to them.

    Skills and Abilities

    • Career development officers must be knowledgeable in labor market statistics and employment laws and policies. They should have effective negotiation and mediation skills. Excellent communication and time management proficiency is also required.

    Working Conditions

    • Career development officers should be able to work flexible hours within an office utilizing various equipment. They must be able to adapt to stressful situations and meet multiple deadlines. Computer skills are essential to a career development officer, as well as effective presentation abilities.

    Training and Certifications

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), career developers should possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree in psychology, business, human resources or sociology. Courses in marketing, social sciences and law are also recommended. Certifications are also available and can be obtained through the Society for Human Resource Management, Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches, Career Management Alliance and the Career Planning & Adult Development Network
