Food marketing helps feed a nation.

Consumerism is at the heart of the United States' economic engine, and food production and its marketing may be the first rung of a stable economy. Food, like water and air, is basic for sustaining life. Marketing creates awareness of food goods available for sale, determining a fair price for all parties involved along the food supply chain. Aspects of marketing also champion health and nutrition. Food marketing helps satisfy the wants and needs of a hungry nation.

  1. Agricultural Distribution

    • Our country is blessed as one of the most fertile agricultural places on earth. Rich farmland and thousands of acres of grazing land produce an abundance of vegetables, fruits and meat. The era of the small subsistence farmer producing just enough for his family has long been replaced by multinational conglomerates that apply science successfully to the growing and raising of our nation's food resources. Marketing the raw food bounty from the farm to manufacturers and distributors is the first step in the marketing chain that brings food from the fields to the table.

    Feeding the Masses

    • There are almost 300 million people in the United States. That's a lot of mouths to feed three full meals daily, supplemented with numerous snack runs. Manufacturers market foods to hungry consumers as part of the endless chain of supply and demand. Without the demand for huge volumes of foodstuffs, the supply would dwindle. Without a reliable food supply, the population would dwindle. Marketing ensures that both the consumers and producers of foods are satisfied by the exchange of quality foods at a fair price.

    Health and Nutrition

    • Our government protects its citizens with oversight of the nation's food supply. The job involves nutrition and safety, and the goal is to ensure world-class health and nutrition for Americans. Determining the optimal levels and kinds of foods for a healthy diet is a longstanding role of the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Policymakers work with food scientists to determine ideal food consumption pyramids, and they warn consumers through public awareness marketing campaigns of the health dangers of the consumption of certain foods like trans fats and high-calorie soft drinks.

    Choice and Selection

    • Food marketing communicates the myriad number of products available to satisfy and excite the American palate. It is not enough that we have cookies. There must be cookies in all flavors and sizes, cookies for babies, cookies for seniors, cookies for the overweight. The choices and selections are almost infinite across every food type. Americans are blessed with food options, and this availability is made known to us through food marketing.

    Economic Engine

    • The purchase of everyday necessities like groceries keeps our country's economic machinery churning, and directly or indirectly fuels the sale of nearly everything else that is bought or sold, big or small. Creating awareness of food goods available for sale, determining a fair price for the producer, manufacturer, distributor and final consumer is the goal of food marketing.
