Baking Soda for Dog Urine

Save

If your pet has urinated your carpet on in your car, clean the area and help to relieve the odor by making a homemade baking soda cleaner. Baking soda has a equalizing effect on odors. You may need to apply the cleaner more than once, depending on the conditions of the carpet and the smell.

Timeline

  • Clean the area immediately, if you have the opportunity. You may have a more difficult getting out stains and smells left untouched for a long time.

Materials

  • This homemade cleaner is made from baking soda and water. Search your pantry shelves first, since these items are fairly common in the kitchen. You also will need several cloth towels.

Prep Work

  • Prepare your area by soaking up any urine that is in the carpet. Blot the area firmly with a dry towel. Then blot with a damp towel, followed by another dry towel.

Baking Soda Shower

  • Cover the area with a "shower" of baking soda and allow the particles to sit on the carpet for at least two hours. Afterward, vaccum the area.

Odor Remover

  • To remove odor, mix equal parts baking soda and water in a bowl and then pour it onto the carpet. Allow the mixture to sit for several minutes. Then blot the area with clean towels and allow to dry. You may need to repeat this process.
