Macy's has been in operation since 1858 when it opened as a dry goods store in New York City. Today, Macy's department stores are found throughout the United States, as well as in Guam and Puerto Rico. The parent company is known as Macy's Inc, which also owns the Bloomingdale's stores. The company expects all of its sales associates to adhere to its principles, which include following ethical business practices, providing quality products and services to customers, respecting the rights and property of others and protecting the interests of corporate shareholders.

Sales associates also receive payments from customers, which may be in cash or via check, credit card or debit card. Sales associates operate cash registers. They count cash, process credit and debit cards, accept discount coupons, provide sales slips and give customers change, if necessary. These salespersons also place customers' purchases in bags or packages.
Sales associates perform other tasks, as assigned, such as stocking racks and shelves, marking prices, preparing displays and taking inventory. As these retail salespersons work, they are continually alert to possible thefts and other security risks. They follow specific store procedures to handle security problems, by calling security guards, for example.
