By answering to the call of faster and more efficient mobile network service, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) came up with the definition of 3G as to: facilitate growth, increase bandwidth and support the rise of more diverse application in every mobile phone. Compared to the preceding standards of Global System for Mobile or GSM which caters not only voice but also circuit-switched data ranging at the speed of up to 14.4 Kbps, 3G is capable of supporting multimedia application that deliver packet-switched data with higher spectrum of efficiency and at speeds surpassing that of the latter.

The 80s gave consumers 1G--the very analog telephone units used during that era is a good example. Then came 2G in the 90s, which featured phones that ran smaller in size. At the dawn of this millennium came the birth of 3G which has reshaped the definitions of our mode of communication.

By redefining the limits of mobile telephone technology, 3G has been categorized into two distinct branches: the 3GPP and 3GPP2, the first being formed in 1998 to supplant the rise of 3G network from the old GSM. Comprising the 3GPP branch are the following technologies: General packet Radio Service or GPRS which had the speed of 114 Kbps; Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution or EDGE with speed at 384 Kbps; UMTS Wideband CDMA or WCDMA with downlink speeds of up to 1.92 Mbps; High Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA which catapulted the downlink speeds to 14 Mbps; LTE Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access or E-UTRA which is aiming for a speed of 100 Mbps.
