The modern spa and Jacuzzi is inviting and luxurious.

The modern spa has evolved from the ancient practice of using water springs to cure ailments and improve well-being. Weapons dating from the Bronze Age were discovered by archaeologists close to hot spring sites in France. The concept of the Jacuzzi also stems from water therapies used by the ancient Greeks. In the 1950s, the Jacuzzi company (formed by the Jacuzzi family, who came to the United States from Italy around 1900) introduced to the public a therapeutic, submersible bathtub water pump.

A spa may be a business in a town or city offering a variety of treatments to daily customers, with the emphasis on beauty and personal care, or a resort where guests can stay for a longer period and enjoy a more intense spa-based experience with additional focus on nutrition and exercise. A Jacuzzi is a device that is filled with water and uses powerful jets on the body. Jacuzzis can range from the traditional circular shape, like a large bathtub, to a modern spa-jet "bed."

Different spas offer many types of massage including deep tissue massage (working on deep layers of muscle to relieve severe tension), reflexology massage (working on certain pressure points on the hands and feet to address specific health issues), cranial sacral massage (working with the skull and the spine to ease nerve tension) and hot stone massage (placing heated stones on the body with varying degrees of pressure). Other spa treatments include facials, body wraps, manicures and waxing.

Spas use a variety of different products for each type of treatment.

Spas use different products depending on the treatment chosen. For body wraps, mud is often used for its natural detoxifying, cleansing and firming properties. A salt scrub (a combination of salt, oil and an extract of a fruit or shrub such as lemon or lavender for fragrance) is commonly used to exfoliate and hydrate the skin, often before a wrap treatment.
For aromatherapy massage, essential oils are used. Hot wax is used for hair removal treatments. For facials specific creams, lotions and oils will be chosen to suit the skin type of each individual client.

Depending on the spa massage treatment, benefits might be stress relief, relaxation, improved posture, circulation or flexibility, post-injury rehabilitation, pain management, relief from headaches, a stronger immune system and lower blood pressure.
