Senior Business Analyst Job Description

Save

A senior business analyst job varies based on the type of industry, department and client the position serves. For example, some business analysts focus on databases that process employee health benefits, while others manage systems that provide data on financial markets. Regardless of the sector, a business analyst's primary goal is to gather, interpret and troubleshoot different pieces of data to improve business processes.

Function

  • Senior business analysts are responsible for reviewing, modifying and recommending business requirements applied to company databases and system applications. This role works closely with the technical team to test the solution, record and track technical issues and implement any needed changes. To gather data on what business requirements should be included during the design stage, business analysts must thoroughly understand their companies' businesses, and the issues and challenges facing the industry and organization. In addition, this role must pinpoint how her firm can leverage its strengths and improve its weaknesses through various business processes.

Education

  • Since this is a senior role, a bachelor's degree is required for a senior business analyst position. Employers often hire professionals who hold a master's degree in business administration (MBA) or a similar field. Five years of experience or more is usually required in the employer's industry. Some of the majors that help prepare for a business analyst career include information technology, accounting, marketing, economics, computer and information science, and statistics.

Skills

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required for a senior business analyst position. Because senior business analysts must interact with executives and technical staff, networking and team building skills are required. Senior business analysts should also have the ability to train, lead and mentor younger analysts. Employers prefer professionals who are tech-savvy and proficient in application programming, as well as different databases. Candidates should also be highly analytical, creative thinkers and avid problem-solvers.

Salary

  • Salaries for senior business analyst roles range across sectors and locations. For example, a senior business analyst located in Greenwich, Connecticut received a $225,000 salary as of July 2006, according to SalaryList.com. The same report reveals that a senior business analyst working in Union City, Indiana received a salary of $160,000 as of November 2006.

Potential

  • According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs for management analysts will increase by 24 percent between 2008 and 2018. Changing regulations, developing technology and the expansion of online transactions will drive demand for analyst roles. The BLS also predicts that companies will hire analysts to design internal and external websites, create online businesses and advise firms on implementing sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices.
