A jewelry sales representative is someone who sells diamonds, rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets or other items worn for decoration. Jewelry sales representatives need to be experts in all forms of jewelry, as well as possess outstanding customer-service skills. Many work on commission, receiving a small base salary along with a percentage of what they sell.

Basics

  • Jewelry sales representatives must have a thorough understanding of the value and cut of certain types of diamonds and stones. Many work with jewelry that is set in price; others can occasionally negotiate with customers. They need to know what jewelry is fashionable, enabling them to make recommendations to the customer. Sometimes, they base their recommendations on a customer’s skin tone, eye color or ring size. On top of knowing jewelry, sales reps are usually required to understand how to operate a cash register, make change and run credit cards in the event they finalize a sale.

Skills

  • Jewelry sales representatives must be experts in communication, particularly as it is related to customer service. They should have a basic understanding of math to help them operate a cash register and, if needed, negotiate prices. They should be polite, professional, confident and possess decent bargaining skills. Just like any salesperson, they should also be presentable, energetic and motivated, as well as possess an ability to assist multiple customers at once.

Background

  • Most jewelry sales representatives need to have at least a high school diploma. Other than that, there really are no set requirements -- although managers typically either need a college degree and success making sales as an everyday rep. But often, a strong work ethic and positive attitude can be just as valuable as a formal education.

Prospects

  • Jobs for jewelry sales representatives are likely to fluctuate along with the rest of the retail sales industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of retail sales workers was expected to increase by about 10 percent through 2022, or about average for job growth.

Earnings

  • Because much of a jewelry sales representative's earnings are based on how much they sell, their wages are hard to pinpoint. According to the BLS, the average salary of sales representatives in jewelry stores was $26,850 in 2013. This compared to an average of $25,370 for all retail salespersons.
