Job Description for a College Recruiter


The job of a college recruiter plays an integral role for the college or university. In general, college recruiters tend to have similar responsibilities across the United States. However, some parts of the job vary depending on the type of college, its goals and the size of the school.


  • The responsibilities of a college recruiter, according to, include gaining lists of openings, communicating with employers, making phone calls to prospective candidates, matching a candidate to a job and doing follow-up work. This job involves quite a bit of travel and may require the employee to work nights and weekends, depending on the month or events.


  • College recruiters visit high schools and set up events for prospective students. When an organization (high school, college or other) hosts a career or college fair, college recruiters attend to represent the ideals, academics and lifestyle of the colleges for which they work.


  • College recruiters also set up events for the students currently living on campus. A college recruiter will often prepare students entering college for the first time by setting up orientation programs during the first semester.

  • Prospective college recruiters should complete a college education. According to, universities prefer applicants who have majored in human resources, business, sociology, economics or other forms of management. In some cases, a job may require a master's degree in business administration (MBA).


  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), recruitment, employment and placement specialists held 182,000 jobs in 2004. According to, recruiters earned an average yearly salary of $41,190 as of 2010. The BLS predicts that the career will grow rapidly in ensuing years.
