A strategic marketing manager handles the promotions of a company. Strategic marketing managers find creative ways to get the word out about a company, and it's products and services. They work in a wide variety of industries and oversee everything from the creation of logos and mottos to strategies to help keep the company profitable.

  • Strategic marketing managers aim to put a positive spin on their company. They look for ways to promote its brand via a multitude of platforms, such as print or broadcast advertising, or through press releases distributed to the media. Strategic marketing directors also oversee company websites and email marketing campaigns. Along with those aspects of the job, they keep an eye on current trends, as well as what the competition is doing, to assist their own efforts. And in the event a marketing manager is in charge of employees, he also hires, trains and organizes a staff.

Skills

  • Strategic marketing managers must be innovative, organized and energetic. They should be motivated and possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Most also need to have an understanding of graphic design, as well as the methods of promotions and advertising. Also, in most cases, strategic marketing managers must have a thorough knowledge of various computer programs and software related to their industry. In the event they manage a staff, they need to own basic leadership skills as well.

Other areas of study often include communications, business, public relations and media. Sometimes, they work in related careers, such as public relations or advertising.

  • Opportunities for strategic marketing managers are expected to grow as fast as those in all other occupations during the next decade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for marketing managers will increase by 12 percent through 2018. The BLS also reported that more than 175,000 employees held the title of marketing manager in 2008.

Earnings

  • Depending on industry, strategic marketing managers have the potential to be among some of the highest earners in the country. According to the BLS, marketing managers earned a median annual salary of $108,580 in May 2008. Highest earners worked in the computer systems design industry, with a median salary of $127,870 per year.
