Asus is a global corporation based in Taiwan.

AsusTeK Computer Incorporated was founded in 1990 by Tawainese businessmen. Asus offers a large selection of computing products and electronic solutions. According to WePC.com, "In 2007, one in three desktop PCs sold was powered by an Asus motherboard; and the company's 2007 revenues reached $6.9 billion."

  1. Name

    • According to the Asus website, the name "ASUS comes from the last four letters of Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology that represents the inspiration of art and learning." The word Pegasus was truncated to only include the last four letters, in an effort to improve its placement in alphabetical listings. There are multiple forums discussing the correct pronunciation of the name, but the officially approved pronunciation is "Ah-Soose."

    Asus Eee

    • Asus's most popular product line is arguably the Asus Eee. According to the Asus Eee PC website, the three E's stand for "Easy to learn, Easy to work, and Easy to play". The product family includes the Asus Eee PC, a light weight netbook computer, and the Asus Eee Box, a lightweight desktop equivalent. In January 2010, the company announced plans to produce a tablet PC called the EeePad, to rival Apple's iPad.

    Features

    • According to Gizmodo.com, "Asus singlehandedly created the budget mini-laptop market", with the Asus Eee netbook starting at just $399 at the time of its 2007 introduction. According to Bizrate.com, Asus products start from $279 and go all the way up to $1,800, depending on the model's features. Asus computers traditionally come standard with the Linux operating system, though newer offerings allow users to choose Microsoft's Windows operating system if they wish.

    Sustainable Computing

    • Green Asus is the firm's sustainable computing initiative. According to the Asus website, "Green ASUS covers four areas: Green Design, Green Manufacturing, Green Procurement, and Green Services and Marketing." Additionally, Asus works with recycling vendors to recycle their old products. The products are then broken down and reused to create new ones. Asus reports that many of its products are more energy efficient than the standard requirement.

    Warranty

    • The warranty terms on Asus computers vary by product and region where the product was purchased. Standard warranties generally range between one and three years, and may be independent of any additional warranty services bought at time of purchase. Additionally, all Asus branded notebook computers purchased in North America are covered by a free Accidental Damage Warranty (ADW). The ADW protects the product from accidental damage for one year, but is limited to one incident per notebook.
