SD cards are thin storage chips used to save multimedia and data files from different electronic devices. They work the same as recordable CDs and Memory Sticks, although they are a lot smaller and much more convenient to carry around. You can purchase SD cards from just about any electronic store, although some electronic devices come equipped with an SD card already. They are widely used and they are just as delicate as a CD. If you scratch, bend or chip the card, it may cause it to malfunction and delete all of your files.

  1. What is an SD Card?

    • A Storage Digital card (SD) is used in place of a memory stick or flash drive on your PC. It is also used in the place of film or tape in a camera or camcorder. In cell phones, an SD card is used to save pictures or videos from your cell phone, as well as transferring files to and from your cell phone. They come in three different sizes; the size used for large electronic devices such as PCs or camcorders is the standardSD card. The cards that are used in smaller electronic devices are the microSD and miniSD cards. These cards must be inserted into an SD card adapter to make them full size before they can be put into an SD card reader.

    Using an SD Card?

    • In order to use an SD card in a PC or laptop, insert the SD card into the SD card reader, find the files that you want to save to the SD card, then drag them to your SD card which is located in the "My Computer" folder. If you're using an SD card in a phone, camera or camcorder, insert the SD card into the SD card slot and begin using the device. Remove the SD card from the device and insert it into the SD card reader on your computer. Open the "My Computer" folder, locate the "SD" card emblem and double-click it t view the saved files.

Which SD Cards Can Be Recovered?

    • Any file that was saved to an SD card can be recovered using an SD card recovery program. These files include programs, documents, images and music files. Even if you cannot see the files on your SD card, they can be recovered. There are hidden files that save to your SD card whenever you save a file to it, these are the files the recovery program uses in order to restore the originals.

    SD Recovery Requirements

    • You will need to find an SD card recovery program online in order to restore your deleted or corrupted files. Once you find a suitable program, download the trial version first. This version will enable you to view your files before installing the full program. The trial version is free, so if it does not work, uninstall it in search for a different program.

How To Recover SD Card Files

    • After installing the recovery program, insert your SD card into the SD card reader on your PC. Open the program, then follow the onscreen prompts to restore your files. Once your files are visible, save them to your desktop or another folder on your computer. Do not save them back to the SD card that was corrupted.
