Most states require individuals who operate motor vehicles to maintain minimum levels of liability insurance. According to the Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch, the state of Kentucky requires anyone wishing to register and operate a motor vehicle in the state to maintain liability insurance as well as a basic no fault personal injury policy.

  1. Function

    • Liability insurance covers damage caused by the driver to an injured party. Liability insurance is typically divided into three parts; bodily injury to a single individual, bodily injury to all injured parties and property damage. No fault insurance provides compensation for damage or injury regardless of which party was at fault.

    Liability Limits

    • According to the Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch, acceptable liability insurance policies must provide at least $25,000 maximum coverage for individual bodily injury and a maximum of $50,000 for bodily injury to all parties. The policy must also provide $10,000 in property damage coverage.

    No Fault Limits

    • Drivers in Kentucky must carry a no fault insurance policy in addition to liability insurance, according to the Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch. The no fault policy must provide coverage of up to $10,000 for medical care, lost wages and other expenses associated with injury due to an automobile collision. No fault policies provide coverage regardless of which driver was at fault.

    Alternatives

    • Kentucky permits drivers to purchase a single liability policy in lieu of maintaining two separate policies, provided the single limit liability policy provides a minimum of $10,000 no fault coverage for personal injury. Single limit liability policies must provide minimum coverage of at least $60,000.

    Warning

    • According to the Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch it is a criminal offense to own or operate a motor vehicle in Kentucky without carrying the appropriate level of insurance. Proof of insurance will be required in order to register a motor vehicle in the state. Failure to maintain the proper level of insurance may result in fines, loss of driver's license and loss of vehicle registration.
