HVAC & DDC Training
Training in HVAC, which stands for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning, helps you install, maintain, troubleshoot and understand HVAC systems. DDC, which stands for direct digital controls, can be part of the HVAC training you receive, as almost all modern HVAC systems use digital controls to adjust HVAC systems, whether it's to adjust temperature, air pressure or humidity.

Identification
-
HVAC and DDC training may give you continuing education credits, depending on the provider. For example, Honeywell offers continuing education credits upon passing many of its courses. HVAC and DDC training is aimed at HVAC technicians and sales personnel and managers, as the information is both practical and useful in understanding how HVAC and DDC works. Due to the fact that DDC systems are electrical-based, there is a lot of engineering and electrical training involved, such as reading and understanding wiring and electrical diagrams.
Types
-
Types of training include on-site seminars, in-class training sessions that last for days or weeks, eLearning and online courses, and study at home options with DVDs, audio and books that you can study on your own. In-class training sessions often include hands-on training in repairing and looking inside HVAC systems and setting up or investigating a DDC.

Topics
-
Topics for HVAC and DDC training including understanding HVAC controls, how to read engineering and electrical diagrams, HVAC terminology, HVAC system components, HVAC controls, control loops, safety, troubleshooting and repair, direct digital technology fundamentals, how to plan and zone direct digital controls and how to measure superheat and subcooling.
Time Frame
-
The time it takes to complete HVAC and DDC training varies by provider and the type of training. It may take two to three days for instructor-led training. For example, Honeywell offers an instructor-led course, Fundamentals of Commercial HVAC, that lasts two and a half days. Online courses can take several hours to days to complete.
Cost
-
Costs for HVAC training can be steep and average about $1,000 per class. For example, Honeywell offers an instructor-led class on the Fundamentals of Commercial HVAC for $1,100. Tempcon Inc. offers one-week seminars from $460-$650 per person.
