About Hawaiian Bridesmaid Dresses

About Hawaiian Bridesmaid Dresses thumbnail
Hawaii's wide varieties of flowers are woven into a wedding.

Hawaiian bridesmaid dresses are traditionally very representative of the Hawaiian culture. The laid-back island feel comes through in many different styles, patterns and colors, and can be accessorized in a variety of ways. Choose carefully when selecting Hawaiian bridesmaids dresses for your wedding; select a dress that represents each bridesmaid and complements her features. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Styles

    • Some of the most popular types of necklines found in Hawaiian bridesmaid dresses are the spaghetti, V-neck and halter. You might also find some Hawaiian bridesmaids dresses that are inspired by the popular Hawaiian luaus, with more emphasis on the sleeves, as well as modern Hawaiian muumuu dresses (a loose dress than hangs from the shoulder). Rather than asking each bridesmaid to wear the same style of dress, you might want to find different long and short dresses in the same patterns to mix up the look.

    Patterns

    • Hawaiian bridesmaid dresses are made in many different patterns and colors, traditionally of native Hawaiian flowers. Some are less understated with big patterns, while others are smaller, more understated patterns. The more popular fabrics are cotton, rayon, silk and poly cotton. Keep the groomsmen in mind when choosing a pattern; the groomsmen outfits should match the bridesmaid dresses in some way, whether it is a similar color scheme or the inclusion of some of the same patterns on the groomsmen outfits.

    Colors

    • Hawaii is rich in colors, and so are Hawaiian bridesmaid dresses. Finding the desired color can prove to be challenging, especially because most Hawaiian bridesmaids dresses are also rich in patterns. Colors vary from big bold reds to more pastel yellows and blues. Choose a color scheme that will complement your overall vision of the wedding.

    Accessories

    • Bridesmaid dresses can be accessorized in a variety of ways. You can always use traditional accessories like gold or silver jewelry and high heel shoes. Or, for a more Hawaiian feel, accessorize the dress with leis, haku lei headbands made of silk flowers, or pinned flowers like hibiscus, orchid or plumeria. If you use flowers, make sure the bridesmaids wear flowers on the right side if they are single and the left side if they are committed to someone else. Fancy flip-flops, shell necklaces and pearls also make appropriate Hawaiian accessories.

    Tips for Travel Care

    • Many Hawaiian weddings are destination weddings, meaning the bridal party and guests all travel to Hawaii for the wedding from somewhere else. The flight to Hawaii is a long one from just about anywhere, and the travel day can take a toll on the bridesmaid dresses if proper care is not taken. Buy a garment bag before you travel, and keep your dress in the bag. Carry the bag on the plane with you, if possible, and ask a flight attendant if he can hang it in an appropriate closet. Ask politely before you board the plane, and tell them it is for a wedding. As long as there is room in the cabin's closet, there should be no problem.
